Liz + Dan Get Married

This day was the whole reason we were in Hawaii – LIZ AND DAN GOT MARRIED! and two single people died. (as the saying goes)

Liz is a kindred spirit – a bosom buddy of sorts – an angel with no wings. We were roommates in college and helped get each other in and out of mischief for three years. She is such a good friend, she’s a poetic, noble, land-mermaid who has seen me through many tough times!

I’ve been to a ton of alumni weddings over the last few years, but this is one that I wouldn’t have missed for the world! You know my code: hoes before bros. Uteruses before duderuses… Ovaries before brovaries. Anyway…

Thank you so much Liz for asking me to come and document such a special day. I love you (and I like you)!

In true Liz fashion, the accessories were on point! 🙂 Her besties Kate Spade and Kendra Scott made their appearance alongside a little island flora. After all, love fades away, but things? Things last forever.

Kammie (maid of honor) is Liz’s calming college friend, a fellow lover of off-beat comedy, and understands that not loving ’90s R&B is number three on the Oh No-Nos list. She helps us remember what’s important in life: Friends, waffles and work. Or waffles, friends, work. It doesn’t matter. But work is third. This wedding would not have been the same without her.

I walked past Dan relaxing by the pool mid-morning. I overheard him chatting to his mom. “I don’t want to do things. I want to not do things.” Eh, whatever… Treat yo self!

Dan, Dan, Dan… I couldn’t have given my blessing to a lesser man. (Not that you asked, you know, and I’m still a little hurt about that) Liz is a beautiful, talented, brilliant, powerful musk-ox…. I love the way you calm her down and the way she makes you smile. You’re a simple man Dan. You like pretty, dark haired women and breakfast food. I’m glad you’ve found your forever girl.

Who’s to say what works? You find somebody you like, and you roll the dice. A Kansas firecracker + A Grumpy old man = Dan and Liz 4eva!

Liz, you beautiful tropical fish. You’re smart as a whip and you’re cool under pressure. Your dress was the most beautiful object I’ve ever seen. It was like the Liz Thatcher Anderson of dresses. It was amazing.

I promised myself I was not going to cry, I’ve already broken that promise five times. Honestly? This moment was 5,000 times better than Candle in the Wind.

A couple kids stopped us on our way to the reception to snapchat with the Bride and Groom. I think this may have been Dan’s highlight of the day.

Congratulations! I love you both! Just remember every time you look up at the moon, I too will be looking at a moon. Not the same moon, obviously, that’s impossible.

xoxo

Rehearsing – Maui Style

After the wedding rehearsal, Dan’s dad shouted us all to dinner at Honu in Lahaina. The food was amazing… but what I loved the most was the intimate celebration with everyone who would be at the wedding the next day. I absolutely loved that everyone was together for the weekend – it felt like a giant family celebration rather than a formal wedding.

Dan’s uncle is a wine aficionado, and gave us multiple lessons on the taste and history of the wines he had chosen for the weekend. Of course, I’m not much of a wine drinker and was promptly labeled a savage. 😉 It all tastes the same to me, so savage I am! 🙂

While we were waiting for our dinner to be served, one of the wait staff approached me.

“You have a big camera… would you like to take a photo of a turtle?”

I could hardly understand him above the noise of the room, but he was gesturing wildly toward the beach and then pointing at my camera. I followed him to the back windows to see a giant green turtle had crawled it’s way up the shore and was soaking up the last of the sun’s rays.

We had to get in on that sunset ourselves, so Liz, Dan and I snuck out to the parking lot for a few quick snaps before dessert. The sunset wasn’t as brilliantly pink as it had been on our first night on the island, but the darkening sky is always gorgeous even when it’s overcast and gray.

The over 50’s retired for the night and the rest of us stayed up talking… Dan named it “Millennial Night”. Funnily enough, we’re all old souls and ended up in bed before midnight anyway.

Senior Photos: Kendall

The week I left the States, I photographed Kendall for her high school senior photos. Fast forward a few weeks and I’ve just moved in to my new home and am finishing up the editing process. My flatmate (roommate) Kayla is looking at the photos and the conversation goes like this:
Me: Her name’s Kendall – these are her senior photos.

Kayla: She’s gorgeous… pause… Did she ask you to take all these photos?

Me: Well, yeah. They’re her senior photos.

Kayla: So is she like… your Muse?

Me: …Awkward pause… I mean, it’s just a senior photo shoot.

We stare at each other for a second then I can’t stop laughing as I realize that, for Kayla, “senior photos” is an unknown concept. It’s our first ‘difference in culture’ moment.

Since a high schooler getting their own photo shoot is a completely foreign idea in New Zealand, I won’t be officially photographing anything like this for awhile. I’m a little sad, because this is such a fun stage of life to photograph… fresh faced youth and beauty on the verge of adulthood.
